Arsenal vs Liverpool: Match preview
After a turbulent season, what will this campaign bring for Arsenal?
Just four weeks ago, Mikel Arteta and his team won the FA Cup in just the rookie manager’s 28th game at the helm.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with a brace in that final as they came from behind to beat Chelsea 2-1.
That cup victory very much saved Arsenal’s season as they finished eighth in the Premier League, their lowest finish for 25 years.
As cup winners though, they snuck into the UEFA Europa League group phase which could be vital, particularly financially.
This season, of course, the primary aim will be to return to the Champions League for the first time since 2016.
First though, Arsenal could win yet another Community Shield.
The Gunners won this competition as reigning cup winners in 2014, 2015 and 2017 and would love to do so again here.
Will Liverpool lift the Community Shield?
Liverpool meanwhile will be looking to add to their trophy cabinet which is beginning to bulge one more.
In 2019, the Reds won the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup having not won a trophy for seven years before that.
In July though, they finally got their hands on the Premier League title; a victory 30 years in the making.
Of course, having won the title with seven games to go an ultimately finished 18 points clear. they’re surely in a strong position to retain their title.
But, Manchester City have already spent big on reinforcements and could get stronger yet.
So, having amassed 97 and 99 points in the last two season, Jürgen Klopp’s side may well need a similar amount if they’re to retain a league title for the first time since 1984.
Incidentally, that year they also won the League Cup and the European Cup.
A repeat wouldn’t be too bad.
Will the Premier League champions start the season with another trophy?
Arsenal team news vs Liverpool
Arsenal have made a few editions so far in the transfer market so could hand a debut or two here.
One of the most interesting positions in the teams though is in goal.
Emi Martínez deputised so well when Bernd Leno was injured at the end of last season but the German could return here.
In defence, Mikel Arteta is expected to revert to a back four despite using a three for last season’s conclusion.
At centre-back, William Saliba is set to make his debut after being loaned back to Saint-Étienne for last season.
Gabriel Magalhães is also seemingly on his way to Arsenal from LOSC Lille but is unavailable for this one.
So, David Luiz could get the nod over Rob Holding as Saliba’s partner.
Sokratis Papastathopoulos looks set to leave Arsenal; Pablo Marí, Shkodran Mustafi and Calum Chambers are injured.
At full-back, Cédric Soares could start with Héctor Bellerín left on the bench.
On the other side, Kieran Tierney is firmly first-choice and Sead Kolašinac has been linked with a move away.
In midfield, Arsenal are somewhat short on experienced options.
Dani Ceballos has returned to Real Madrid following the conclusion of his loan while Mattéo Guendouzi and Mesut Özil are still seemingly frozen out.
Lucas Torreira and Ainsley Maitland-Niles could also leave the club.
So, Granit Xhaka’s partner could be forgotten man Mohamed Elneny who’s back after a season on loan at Beşiktaş.
Further forward, Willian has been recruited from Chelsea but isn’t expected to make his debut in this one.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang meanwhile does look set to sign a new contract although that is yet to be officially announced.
He could form an attacking trio alongside Bukayo Saka and Nicolas Pépé.
Gabriel Martinelli is injured so Joe Willock, Reiss Nelson and Emile Smith Rowe will be on the bench.
In attack, Eddie Nketiah could get the nod to lead the line over Alexandre Lacazette.
Liverpool team news vs Arsenal
As for Liverpool, Jürgen Klopp showed last season that he is not afraid to give youth a chance and could do just that again here.
Adrián could get the nod over Alisson in goal.
At the back, regulars Virgil van Dijk, Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold could all be rested.
So, at full-back, Neco Williams could get a chance on the right.
On the other side, their only new recruit so far Kostas Tsimikas could make his debut after joining from Olympiacos for £11.75 million.
In the middle, Joe Gomez’s partner is likely to be Joël Matip; Sepp van den Berg and Ki-Jana Hoever are the more youthful alternatives.
In midfield, Curtis Jones, who showed flashes of brilliance last season, is expected to start here.
Fabinho and Naby Keïta could make up the midfield trio.
Although, James Milner, Georginio Wijnaldum, Marko Grujić and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are all alternatives.
Jordan Henderson isn’t likely to be fit.
In attack, Klopp could rest all three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino.
Takumi Minamino and 17 year old Harvey Elliott could flank Rhian Brewster who enjoyed a very productive loan spell at Swansea for the second half of last season.
Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi are also options.
