EXCLUSIVE: Gippy Grewal says Dharma Productions didn't tell him his 'Nach Punjaban' vocals will be used in Jugjugg Jeeyo: 'The entire trailer has been cut around my vocals'

Singer-actor Gippy Grewal has now opened up about the controversy surrounding 'The Punjaabban Song' in Jugjugg Jeeyo starring Varun Dhawan, Kiara Advani, Anil Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor. The song, originally named 'Nach Punjaban', was sung by Abrar Ul Haq who had claimed that he had not given rights to Dharma Productions. Meanwhile, Gippy Grewal claims he was told by music composer Tanishk Bagchi that his vocals were not used at all only for the singer to find out that the entire trailer was cut around his vocals.

EXCLUSIVE: Gippy Grewal says Dharma Productions didn't tell him his 'Nach Punjaban' vocals will be used in Jugjugg Jeeyo: 'The entire trailer has been cut around my vocals'

In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Gippy Grewal said that he was reached out for the track 'The Punjaabban Song' which was heavily used in Jugjugg Jeeyo and during promotions as well. He said he will listen to the music and record it and send it across. “They sent to me saying 'You sing this song!' They said, 'Sir, will you sing this song, 'Nach Punjaban'?' I said, 'I will listen to it and if my vocals fit, I will sing it!' So I heard the track, recorded it and send it to them. Nobody called me for three months. So I assumed that nobody liked my vocals and they didn’t use it. One day I saw the poster that read that the trailer is coming out tomorrow. So I messaged their music director Tanishk Bagchi if his vocals had been used, and he said ‘No, it was Dharma’s call’. I said, 'That's fine! No problem and good luck. We will do something next time. The next day, the trailer came out and I didn’t watch it because I thought that my song hadn’t featured in it, so I wasn’t interested. My brother called me from Australia and said, ‘You sang well, you didn’t tell me?' And I was like, 'Where did you hear my song?' He said that your vocals are in the trailer. So when I looked up the trailer, the entire trailer has been cut around my vocals.”

Gippy Grewal was rather surprised that the music director wasn't aware of it and that the singer wasn't informed either. Then, he messaged Tanishk to tell the makers to not use his vocals because he didn't feel like doing the song anymore. “They had obviously used it, and they called me and tried to explain. Their entire promotion was based on the song, nobody said who sang it. I don’t know what competition they had.”

Gippy Grewal further said that he felt even more uncomfortable after singer Abrar Ul Haq, who sang the original track, tweeted saying he had not given the rights of the song to Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. His tweet had read ,”I have not sold my song “ Nach Punjaban” to any Indian movie and reserve the rights to go to court to claim damages. Producers like @karanjohar should not use copy songs. This is my 6th song being copied which will not be allowed at all. @DharmaMovies @karanjohar.”

Upon seeing the tweet, Gippy thought, “I was stuck. I realised this is Abrar’s song, and they’ve taken his rights—and I’ve grown up listening to him, and I respect him a lot. And I had not signed any agreement, and I got a nice call from Azeemji in Dharma Productions so I signed. He told me about the cheque and I explained that it’s not about the money, and to please not do this. If I had to do it for money, I would have said it before sending my vocals. But, please don't do these things. I don’t understand these things…”

Juggjugg Jeeyo, starring Varun Dhawan, Kiara Advani, Anil Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor, released on June 23, 2022.
