West Ham reveal new Premier League ’15 fit players’ rule & no new Covid-19 cases after latest round of testing

Premier League & weakened teams

In her weekly column in The Sun, West Ham director Karren Brady has revealed a key update from last week’s discussions around Project Restart.

Over the years, the Premier League has periodically punished clubs who have been accused of fielding weakened teams.

Historically, teams like Blackpool and Wolves have been sanctioned by the Premier League for such actions.

In 2011, the Premier League sharpened the rules on weakened teams. The amendment allowed clubs to avoid any punishment provided they pick players from their 25-man matchday squad.

However, Karren Brady has now confirmed another new change to those rules.

New Premier League ’15 fit players’ rule revealed by West Ham’s Karren Brady

When the Premier League restarts, clubs will be assumed to have fielded a full-strength side provided they can name 15 players in their matchday squad.

Those players can either come from the club’s first team, or from the U21 setup.

West Ham’s Karren Brady revealed:

As long as you have 15 fit players (including one goalkeeper) made up from either your 25-man squad list or from your Under-21’s you will be deemed to have a team fit enough to fulfil the fixture.

I guess that puts an end to the suggestion of having five subs, because if only 15 are needed you can’t have five subs!

What happens if a team cannot field 15 players?

In her article, Karren Brady suggested that in this event, the 2019-20 Premier League season would be automatically ended:

What if a number of teams don’t have 15 fit players?

Well at that point the season will be curtailed, and the Premier League are recommending a points- per-game formula to decide the award of places.

Good news: No new Covid-19 cases after latest round of testing

On Saturday night, the Premier League’s Project Restart received another shot in the arm.

It’s been confirmed that there were zero positive results from the Premier League’s latest round of Covid-19 testing.

In total, the Premier League carried out 1130 tests in it’s fourth round of testing.
