Various reports in the English media over the last 24 hours suggest Chelsea have decided to take up the option to extend Olivier Giroud’s contract.
Giroud linked with move away
Going back just six months ago, this decision may have seemed very unlikely.
Frank Lampard’s arrival in the Chelsea dugout saw the Frenchman become somewhat of a fringe player.
Between September and January of this campaign, Giroud garnered just two Premier League appearances, totalling 91 minutes of action.
The 33-year-old’s dramatic decrease in game time inevitably led to speculation that Giroud would be departing Stamford Bridge in January.
A number of top sides were linked with the former Arsenal standout, including Tottenham and Inter Milan.
Giroud even claimed in February that he saw himself far away from Chelsea in the winter window:
“In January, I saw myself far away from Chelsea. I saw six complicated months ahead of me. That’s why I had the desire to change scenery. I tried to leave in January. It was all done, but in the end Chelsea didn’t want to let me go.” As quoted by the Evening Standard.

Giroud’s U-turn
The World Cup winner, of course, didn’t leave the capital giants and before the season was halted, Giroud actually found himself back in favour somewhat.
Giroud featured in Chelsea’s last four league ties, starting three and scoring two.
And now, as mentioned above, Giroud, who currently has just a few months remaining on his current deal, looks set to be handed a contract extension.
Goal reported late on Friday evening that Chelsea have exercised an option to extend Giroud’s contract until 2021 in order to protect against losing him for free in the summer.
However, Goal also claimed that Chelsea could still look to sell Giroud, but they would likely block a move to Tottenham.
The Telegraph’s Matt Law also reported that the Blues have decided to extended Giroud’s contract:
