Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette was denied an obvious penalty vs Cardiff

Arsenal 2 – Cardiff 1

On another day Cardiff would have got something out of their trip to Arsenal in the Premier League.

However, on an emotional night at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal beat the Bluebirds 2-1.

This was the first match Cardiff had competed in since record signing Emiliano Sala went missing as travelled in a small aircraft from France to England.

Sala is presumed to have died, although that’s still not yet been confirmed.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang broke the deadlock for Arsenal with a penalty in the 66th minute.

Alexandre Lacazette doubled Arsenal’s lead with a stunning solo goal seven minutes from time.

However Cardiff set up a nervous final few minutes after Nathanie Mendez-Laing scored in the final stages.

Had Arsenal dropped points against Cardiff, Alexandre Lacazette’s penalty shout would surely be a huge issue this Wednesday.

In the run-up to the halftime break, Arsenal’s centre-forward was fouled on the edge of the Cardiff box.

Cardiff #5 Bruno Ecuele clipped the back of Lacazette’s heel just inside the Bluebirds area.

Lacazette hit the deck but no penalty was awarded.

Lacazette’s goal against Cardiff was special.

The French forward picked up possession tight on the right-hand touchline, more than 30-yards from goal.

Sol Bamba quickly closed down Lacazette.

Indeed, the Cardiff defender actually left the French forward on all-fours.

But Lacazette quickly bounced back on his feet to race clear of Bamba.

As he revved up speed, Cardiff’s defenders backed off.

That allowed Lacazette to advance into the Cardiff box.

Lacazette finished with a low shot that nestled in the far corner of the net.
