Southampton 1 – Crystal Palace 1
Both Southampton and Crystal Palace were hoping for maximum points at St Mary’s on Wednesday night to boost their Premier League survival hopes.
In the end the match ended 1-1.
Wilfried Zaha ended his goal-drought firing the Eagles into the lead on the south coast.
However James Ward Prowse continued his excellent recent form by slotting home the leveller for the Saints.
Wilfried Zaha sent off vs Southampton
Crystal Palace finished the match with 10 men.
That’s after the two goalscorers got into a late confrontation.
The incident started in the 87th minute when Ward Prowse fouled Zaha by pushing him over on the touchline.
Referee Andre Marriner failed to award Zaha a free-kick, which triggered a bad reaction.
After receiving no protection from the official, Zaha pushed Ward Prowse as he prepared to take a throw-in.
Ward Prowse proceeded to wind up Zaha.
First, the Southampton midfielder spat on the turf.
Then Ward Prowse put his hand on Zaha’s head.
Zaha responded by putting his hands on the Southampton midfielder.
Zaha was clearly aggressive as he appeared to lose control.
Referee Marriner stepped into the mix to book Zaha for his behaviour.
Zaha was obviously furious with the official, and he proceeded to sarcastically clap his yellow card.
As a result of that dissent, Marriner showed the Crystal Palace star his marching order.
Fears Zaha will be severely punished by the FA
Wilfried Zaha has picked up a 1 game ban for the Eagles.
He’ll miss this weekend’s Premier League match against Fulham.
But will Zaha be hit with an even longer ban?
Those fears have been raised by Zaha’s behaviour after his red card was shown at St Mary’s.
Zaha took a long time to exit the pitch as he failed to keep his emotions in check.
As reported in the Daily Mail, the FA have precedent in this situation regarding Leicester’s Jamie Vardy:
Zaha repeated his show of dissent and as the home crowd taunted him, he applauded the whole ground.
It was an unedifying end to Zaha’s evening and the FA, who banned Jamie Vardy for failing to leave the pitch in an appropriate manner, may take action.
