Jurgen Klopp on Liverpool’s 2019/20 Champions League group

Champions League group stage

The 2019/20 Champions League group stages were drawn on Thursday.

On the whole, English sides got pretty lucky and managed to avoid a lot of the competitions heavy hitters such as FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus, Atletico Madrid and PSG.

Chelsea have arguably the hardest group of the English sides, being drawn against Ajax, Valencia and LOSC Lille.

Tottenham then have perhaps the hardest single opponent as they have been drawn alongside Bayern Munich.

Klopp reacts to Liverpool’s group

As for Liverpool, they have been pitted against Napoli, Salzburg and Belgium outfit, Genk.

While Napoli are probably their toughest opponents, Liverpool fans will likely be happy with that group overall.

The Reds won their 6th CL title last season, which was their first bit of silverware under Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp has since had his say on Liverpool’s 2019/20 group stage draw:

Napoli again! I don’t know how often I’ve now played against Napoli, but they’re obviously a very experienced side.

I will need now to have another, closer look at Genk and Salzburg, but I already know they are very young, very exciting and very fresh, so it will be interesting, 100 per cent.

I don’t think I’ve ever played against Salzburg or Genk, so that’s interesting. It’s how it always is, it’s not an easy group and not a group where we can hide behind anybody.

We have to try everything to go through, but we are really looking forward to it like always. Now we know the opponents, when we were walking off the pitch from training I immediately spoke with Divock about playing Genk!

We will do our analysis and research on all three teams, but we know they all played exceptional seasons last year.

Of course, Salzburg are famous for bringing through new players, like they did with Sadio and Naby – they’ve found a lot of others, too. It will be really interesting. As quoted by Liverpool’s official website.
