Italian reporter Fabrizio Romano has broken a transfer story on Thursday.

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling is poised to join AS Roma for 2019-20.

Smalling, who has yet to feature for Man United this season, is set to sign for Roma on loan.

How much will Roma pay Man United for Smalling?

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Smalling has “accepted” the switch to Roma.

Moreover, Roma will pay Man United three million euros to hire the centre-half for the season.

It’s also been stressed that Roma have no secured an option to buy Smalling at the end of the deal.

Accordingly, the defender should return to Old Trafford.

Smalling’s contract at Man United

Smalling, 29, recently signed a contract extension at Old Trafford until 2022.

However, following Harry Maguire’s move to United from Leicester, Smalling has dropped down the pecking order.

It’s worth noting that Man United started the Premier League season with seven centre-backs in their squad.

In addition, it was previously claimed that Everton tried and failed to sign Smalling this summer.

Everton enquiry about taking Chris Smalling on loan has been turned down by United. Seven centre-backs in the squad but Solskjaer wants to keep him. Rojo most likely to go if there's a departure.
