Covid-19 & transfer fees: 28% price drop fears in top-5 leagues, Paul Pogba value may fall to €35m

Covid-19 & transfer fees

As the coronavirus pandemic shows no signs of abating, it’s still unclear when football will restart.

Concurrently, some are beginning to consider how the Covid-19 crisis may affect wider footballing issues including transfer fees.

Of course, such matters are of low priority when compared to the death rates around the world from the virus.

However, if transfer fees do implode, there’s no doubt that the ripple effects will be significant.

CIES: Possible 28% price drop in top-5 leagues

In the latest report from the CIES Football Observatory, the issue of how Covid-19 will impact transfer fees has been examined:

In the event that no matches will be played and no contract will be extended until the end of June.

As such, the total player transfer value at big-5 league level would decrease by 28%: from €32.7 to €23.4 billion.

Paul Pogba value may fall to €35m

The CIES Football Observatory also specifically honed in Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba’s transfer value.

27-year-old Pogba is under contract at Man United until 2021.

However, Pogba’s fitness is now in question following a hugely disrupted 2019-20 campaign.

The French World Cup winner has only made seven Premier League appearances for United this season.

According to the CIES Football Observatory, Pogba’s value may halve:

The greatest loss in relative terms concerns ageing footballers with short-term contracts who played fewer matches during current season than in the previous one.

As matter of example, Paul Pogba’s estimated transfer value would almost halve from €65M to €35M.
