Man City’s Premier League points deduction threat & rumours ramp up about Pep Guardiola’s successor

Man City: Premier League points deduction threat

In the Times on Monday, Manchester City fans are warned that when the Premier League finally resumes, their club could be docked points.

Reporter Paul Joyce has confirmed that the Premier League continue to investigate claims that Man City breached Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

If found guilty, Man City could be docked points in the Premier League. The Times report:

The Premier League is continuing its investigation into alleged breaches of financial fair play by Manchester City despite football shutting down due to the coronavirus pandemic.

City could face domestic sanctions… the possibility of City being docked points has been mooted.

Man City, FFP & Champions League ban

At the same time, UEFA have previously decided that Man City have breached their Financial Fair Play rules.

As a result, the Sky Blues have been banned from European competition for the next two years.

Yet, it’s unclear when that banning order will come into effect considering the current suspension of football due to the Covid-19 crisis. The Times report:

It emerged last week that eight of the top ten clubs — barring City and Sheffield United — have joined together to try to prevent Pep Guardiola’s side playing in the Champions League next season should they make a request for their two-year ban to be frozen during an appeal.

City have taken their legal battle with Uefa to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), although the prospect of a swift resolution has been hit with all hearings postponed until May 1.

Patrick Vieira & Mauricio Pochettino

Who will Man City appoint to succeed Pep Guardiola?

Guardiola remains in charge of the Sky Blues until the end of next season, however speculation is mounting over who could be City’s next manager.

In the Athletic, current Nice manager Patrick Vieira has been linked with Man City:

It is fair, however, to say that Vieira is still on City’s radar at a time when (Ferran) Soriano and Txiki Begiristain, the club’s director of football, are already looking at potential replacements and concluded a while back — a line that has never been reported before — that there will be only three to six managers in the world who could follow Guardiola and take on City’s philosophy.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail have tried to convince their readers that Mauricio Pochettino could be Man City’s next manager.

How have the Mail reached this conclusion? Because Pochettino recently watched Arsenal U23s take on their City counterparts:

An interested observer at the recent Arsenal v Manchester City Under 23 game at the Emirates was none other than former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, who took in the action with sidekick Jesus Perez and other coaches.

Some of those in attendance wondered if he was watching the future players of his next club, with City known to be long-standing admirers of the Argentine.
