Contracts have recently become a real concern for Tottenham Hotspur, with a number of key players entering their final year.
Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld are three names who could leave north London for free next summer.
However, in a huge boost for Spurs, the club are growing in confidence that Alderweirled could recommit his future, according to the Sun.
Spurs’ growing confidence over Alderweireld’s contract U-turn
Following an 18-month dispute, a resolution to Alderweirled’s contract with Tottenham could finally have been found.
Both parties have been in a stand-off, but there is a growing belief at Spurs, the 31-year-old could still agree to new terms.
One of the biggest shocks of the summer was the Belgian’s defender’s £25 million release clause expiring without being activated.
AS Roma, Manchester United and Manchester City all showed an interest in him but never produced a firm offer.
Alderweirld has since featured in both of the north London club’s opening two fixtures this season, partnering Davinson Sanchez.
There has been some concern amongst Spurs supporters his fellow countryman Vertonghen is now also having contract issues.
Like Alderweirled in 2018, Vertonghen has been dropped by Mauricio Pochettino, but, according to the Daily Mail, it has been due to fitness concerns.
Should Alderweirled re-commit his future by signing a new deal, Pochettino wants to add him to his long-term plans.
Real Madrid could still produce offer for Eriksen
The Sun’s report also notes that Real Madrid could still produce an offer for Christian Eriksen.
Los Blancos have left it late to move for the Dane to avoid the tedious process of negotiating with Daniel Levy.
Pochettino has admitted the midfielder still being at the club is damaging for both Spurs and the player.
Pochettino said:
“It’s not the best situation for him and for everyone.
“It is not what I think the club or the player expected to be.
“You cannot put a finger on the problem.
“You try to minimalise the problem, try to treat the situation.
“This is an important player who needs to help the team with his performances.
“I am always open to help the club and to help the decision of Daniel.”
The Spanish club only have until September 2 to complete a move for Eriksen this summer.
