Manchester United have exercised their option to extend David De Gea’s deal with the club, according to Sky Sports.
De Gea’s rise to stardom
28-year-old shot-stopper De Gea made the move to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in 2011.
The Rojiblancos youth product initially struggled to settle, though, with many having questioned whether or not De Gea would be capable of fulfilling his unquestionable potential under the bright lights of one of world football’s biggest clubs.
The years since, though, have seen the Madrid native do just that, and more.
De Gea has established himself as one of, if not the finest goalkeeper on the planet over recent seasons, cementing his status as Manchester United’s most important player, as well as an ever-present between the posts for Spain.

De Gea staying put
However, with Manchester United having, to this point, largely failed to capitalize on their shot-stopper’s brilliance in terms of securing meaningful silverware, De Gea has inevitably been linked with a possible departure from Old Trafford over the last couple of seasons.
And, with the Spaniard’s current deal in Manchester having been due to expire next summer, fans of the Red Devils have long been fretting regarding the long-term future of their most important player.
But, as per the aforementioned report from Sky Sports News this afternoon, all associated with Manchester United can, for the time being at least, rest easy regarding De Gea’s place at the club.
This is due to news that the board at Old Trafford have exercised the one-year extension option in De Gea’s contract:

‘Optimistic’
News of United’s move to tie down De Gea comes less than 24 hours after another significant update on the Spaniard’s future.
As per Ciaran Kelly of the Manchester Evening News:
United and David de Gea’s camp have been ‘optimistic’ he will sign new deal. ‘Keeper’s been moved by fans’ support and his partner has relocated to Manchester. Key for United now is to prove they can match his ambition. Class act. #mufc
