Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has revealed his opinion that N’Golo Kante’s new role under Maurizio Sarri could soon see the Frenchman seek an exit from the club.
Kante’s rise to stardom
Kante, who arrived at Stamford Bridge from Leicester City in the summer of 2016, has proven an absolute revelation since making the move to the Premier League from Caen in 2015.
After playing a starring role for the Foxes on their way to securing a shock English top-flight crown during his debut campaign with the club, Kante was sought out by a number of Europe’s top clubs, with the likes of Manchester United, PSG and Juventus having all been linked with moves for the diminutive Frenchman.
Chelsea stint
However, in the end, it was Chelsea who opted to splash out the required £32 million to coax Kante away from the King Power Stadium, a fee which, in hindsight, has proven an absolute bargain.
The 27-year-old has gone from strength to strength since his move to London, racking up both the Premier League Player and Players’ Player of the Year awards for the 2016/17 season, as he secured his second league title in his first two seasons in England.
‘He’s wasted’
However, following another stellar campaign at Stamford Bridge last season, Kante has, by his standards, struggled of late, having been deployed in a new position by Blues’ boss Maurizio Sarri this season.
To accommodate for Jorginho’s arrival, Kante has been pushed away from his deep-lying berth into a wider, more attack-minded role.
And while the Frenchman has nevertheless proven typically hard-working and diligent in spite of his inexperience in an attacking role, the fact that Kante is, without doubt, simply a superior player when deployed as an out-and-out defensive midfielder is undeniable.
And one individual who feels as though his being played out of position could soon see Kante pursue a departure from Stamford Bridge is former Blues and Republic of Ireland striker Tony Cascarino.
Speaking in an interview with talkSPORT earlier today, Cascarino revealed:
‘I think the issue with Kante is they have given him a new contract. Because they know so many clubs are sniffing around him. But he’s being played out of position.’
‘You feel he’s wasted.’
‘I think certainly PSG would be in for him as well as other clubs. and why wouldn’t they? He’s the best at his position in the world, without a doubt, for me.’
‘That’s why he signed a new deal. But I don’t believe it will be enough to keep him there if Kante plays in that position all season.’
‘I think by the end of the season he might have had enough. Knowing he’s a far better player in the positions he is more accustomed to.’
