Championship outfit West Bromwich Albion have this afternoon confirmed the loan signing of Everton’s Mason Holgate.
Everton stint
Holgate, a 22-year-old central defender who can also play at full-back, joined Everton in 2015 from Barnsley.
After struggling to make an impact during his debut campaign at Goodison Park, the youngster went on to make 16 Premier League starts over the course of the 2016/17 season, before adding a further 13 league starts to his résumé last time out.
However, despite impressing during his time spent on the pitch, Holgate has found game-time hard to come by to this point in the current campaign.
The English U21-international has fallen firmly behind all of Kurt Zouma, Yerry Mina and Michael Keane in the defensive pecking order of Toffees’ boss Marco Silva.
West Brom switch
As such, this afternoon’s news that Holgate has secured a move away from Merseyside has come as little surprise.
The talented stopper is set to spend the remainder of the campaign on loan with Championship outfit West Bromwich Albion:

‘A good, good player’
Speaking to the Baggies’ official website a short time ago, West Brom boss Darren Moore confirmed his delight at having secured Holgate’s signature, as his side aim to secure promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking:
‘I tried to bring Mason into the squad in the summer. But at that stage Everton were not willing to release him.’
‘I watched him play against Salomon Rondon in the goalless draw at The Hawthorns last season and I thought he was outstanding. I want to get our business done as early as possible and this is a good start. I’m grateful to get him into the squad now.’
‘First and foremost he is a good, good player. He is quick, agile, athletic, comfortable on the ball. He’s a young, up-and-coming player with a big future. But he already has good Premier League experience including playing in a Merseyside derby and that is a real furnace to handle. ‘
‘He will compete for the right-back and central defensive positions. His enthusiasm to come also impressed me – he wants to play and I believe he is going to be a good addition for us.’
