Romelu Lukaku’s new role at Man United revealed vs Bournemouth & his Marcus Rashford problem

Manchester United 4 – Bournemouth 1

The Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revolution at Manchester United continued on Sunday against Bournemouth.

Solskjaer maintained his 100% winning record at Man United with a 4-1 win over the Cherries.

Paul Pogba again stole the headlines as the French World Cup winner scored a brace.

Since Jose Mourino left United, Pogba has three assists and four goals in three matches.

Marcus Rashford added United’s third, before Romelu Lukaku returned to action in the second half to score a fourth.

He may have only played 20 minutes against Bournemouth, but there were a couple of noticeable signs that Romelu Lukaku may have a new role at Man United.

As analysed by Paul Hirst in the Times, under Mourinho Lukaku was often used as a backboard as Man United built their attacks:

United fans have over the past 18 months become used to seeing Lukaku demand the ball to his feet with his back to goal.

He would cushion the ball, play it backwards, and United would start building an attack from deep.

However, the problem was that it was a boring, slow, methodical way of starting an attack, far too predictable.

When Lukaku stepped on the pitch against Bournemouth, the Belgian seemed to reveal he now has a new mindset.

Lukaku’s body-language suggested that Solskjaer no longer wants his attacker to come deep, but rather he wants him bursting through the opponents backline.

Seconds after stepping onto the pitch, Lukaku’s arm was pointed towards the Bournemouth goal as he showed his attacking intent.

Two minutes later, Lukaku found the target.

Once again the Belgian was playing on the shoulder of the last defender, which allowed Paul Pogba to pick him out with a ball over the top.

Lukaku’s Marcus Rashford problem

However, Paul Hirst is keen to stress in the Times that Lukaku may have a problem moving forward.

Lukaku seems to be in a battle with Marcus Rashford for a starting berth in the United XI:

(Lukaku) may be the club’s second most expensive signing, but he is second in the pecking order behind Rashford.

With Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard playing well in the front three, it seems a straight shoot-out between Rashford and Lukaku for the central striker’s position in Solskjaer’s team.

Where does this leave Alexis Sanchez?

How will the Chilean get into Man United’s side?
