Chelsea star Antonio Ruidger has today been forced to undergo surgery on a knee problem, raising fears he may not play again this season.
Man United 1-1 Chelsea
Maurizio Sarri’s men travelled to Old Trafford on Sunday evening, for a crunch Premier League clash with Manchester United.
The Blues headed into proceedings occupying the final of the English top-flight’s top-4 spots, sitting 3 points adrift of Tottenham in 3rd.
Manchester United, meanwhile, sat 3 points further back in 6th.
As such, both sides were aware that their European hopes for next season hung in the balance ahead of kick-off.
Alonso cancels out Mata
And, when all was said and done in Manchester, the 3-point gap between the clubs remained intact, as Chelsea tightened their grip on 4th-place.
Hosts United came out of the blocks on top, bagging a deserved opener with 10 minutes on the clock through Juan Mata.
However, just when it looked as though the Red Devils were set to head into the interval with their lead intact, and in control of proceedings, the latest headline-making blunder on the part of David de Gea allowed Marcos Alonso to slot home on the rebound.

And, following a second-half during which Chelsea largely-dominated, but struggled to carve out clear-cut opportunities, both sides were eventually forced to make do with a point.
Rudiger blow
However, while it was Sarri’s men who emerged the happier from the clash after dealing a potentially-fatal blow to Manchester United’s top-4 hopes, the Blues were also dealt a blow of their own, on the injury-front.
The player to have picked up the problem was Antonio Rudiger.
German stopper Rudiger, who was rushed back from a two-week spell on the sidelines to feature at Old Trafford on Sunday, lasted just over an hour, before limping off with an issue in his knee.
And, as per a report from the reliable Matt Law, the former Roma man’s fresh concern could well see him ruled out for the remainder of the season.
Rudiger has today travelled to Italy to undergo surgery on his knee.
And, according to Law:
‘Should meniscus damage be confirmed, then the 26-year-old is looking at a minimum of 10 weeks of rehabilitation.’
