Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness was this evening in characteristically-no nonsense form, when questioned on Tottenham stopper Kieran Trippier’s defending in the buildup to Liverpool’s opener at Anfield.
Liverpool vs Tottenham
The two sides are currently locked in action on Merseyside, in an absolutely integral clash in the race for both the Premier League title, and the battle for a spot in the top-4.
Manchester City’s victory at Fulham yesterday afternoon saw the Citizens climb above Liverpool to the summit of the English top-flight table once more.
Having fallen off the blistering pace being set by the Premier League’s top-2 of late, Spurs, on the other hand, are now in the midst of a tightly-contested battle to maintain their Champions League status for next season.
Manchester United’s win over Watford yesterday saw the Red Devils join Mauricio Pochettino’s men in 3rd-place.
Both Arsenal and Chelsea, meanwhile, sat just a point adrift of the North Londoners ahead of kick-off this evening.
Firmino on target
The opening 45 minutes at Anfield saw Liverpool largely-dominate, with Jurgen Klopp’s men having burst out of the blocks in typically enthusiastic fashion.
And the frenetic pace set by the hosts saw them rewarded with a quarter of an hour on the clock, when a gorgeous whipped Andy Robertson cross from the left saw the unmarked Roberto Firmino nod home.

And that ball by Andrew Robertson… perfection!

‘Not a very good defender’
But, while Firmino had all the time in the world to place his header beyond Hugo Lloris, Robertson was also afforded far too much room to pick out his delivery.
Kieran Trippier was the man to have stood off Robertson, with the topic of the Spurs’ stopper’s defending having come to the fore during the half-time analysis session of the opening 45 minutes on Sky Sports.
And Graeme Souness’ typically-blunt summing up of Trippier’s defensive abilities as a whole has since been going viral online, with the exchange having gone as follows:
David Jones: ‘Why doesn’t Trippier close down Robertson?’
Souness: ‘Well he’s not a very good defender’

Graeme Souness the first pundit brave enough to finally acknowledge Trippier is a bad defender. Hallelujah.

Souness hitting the nail on the head again. “Trippier is not a good defender”. That would’t be an issue if he wasn’t a full back. Exposed week after week.
